The Sick Children's Trust

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Health/Medical

The Sick Children's Trust was founded in 1982 by two paediatric specialists Dr Jon Pritchard and Professor James Malpas. They believed that having parents on hand during hospital treatment benefited a child's recovery. Rainbow House, our first Home from Home, opened its doors to families with children undergoing treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1984. Today we have seven Homes from Home at major hospitals around the country, each providing clean comfortable accommodation for families with seriously ill children. There is a growing demand for our 'Homes from Home' as children must increasingly travel long distances to get the specialist treatment they need. To date we have helped more than 30,000 families.

The Stephen Carey Fund

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Health/Medical

The Stephen Carey Fund was set up in memory of 21 year old Stephen who died after collapsing during a football match in July 2012. Stephen, from Alnmouth in Northumberland, was representing the village side in a game in July 2012 when the tragic incident happened. Desperate attempts were made to resuscitate him at the match before paramedics arrived, but neither they nor the doctors at Wansbeck Hospital could save him. Stephen had been born with a heart problem, but no one ever suspected it, and he might never have suffered any symptoms. This campaign has been supported by the NNL, Northumberland FA and Stephen's family. With over 100,000 lives being lost each year due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the current lack of equipment and skills in the public domain it is organisations like The Stephen Carey Fund who are raising both the awareness of the issues and putting in place solutions to the problems. The Stephen Carey Fund works with businesses, local and national government funded organisations and local communities to install Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) across Northumberland and also to ensure that we increase the number of people with life saving skills so that they have both the knowledge and confidence to use those skills and the equipment provided.

In these circumstances the Survival Fund may be able to help. Even small amounts can make big differences to the lives of those in crisis. In addition to individuals, many charitable organisations have been assisted by the Trust. One notable example is the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, which was established in 1915.
