The Detroit Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1914 when ten young Detroit society women each contributed $100 and pledged to find 100 additional subscribers to donate $10 to support the symphony. They organized quickly, hiring Weston Gales, a 27-year-old church organist from Boston, as music director. The orchestra's first concert took place at the old Detroit Opera House on February 26, 1914. Today, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is Michigan's premier performing arts institution. The DSO performs concerts in historic Orchestra Hall, which is among the most preeminent concert halls in the world.

DSW (Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung) is an international development and advocacy organisation. We empower young people and communities in low- and middle-income countries by addressing the issues of population dynamics and by improving health as a way to achieve sustainable development. With a headquarters in Hanover, Germany, DSW maintains four country offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, as well as a liaison office in Berlin, Germany and Brussels, Belgium. Our programmes in Africa and Asia, we help young people to fight their way out of poverty. Unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS compound poverty and mean death for many young people. For this reason, we promote reproductive health and family planning projects and health initiatives in developing countries. DSW campaigns on behalf of those who hold the future of their country in their hands: the young people of today and the parents of tomorrow. Since 1995, we have built a network of some six hundred youth clubs for sexual and reproductive health education and AIDS prevention in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Through our Youth-to-Youth initiative, peer educators at these clubs teach other young people how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and HIV infection. Experience shows that sex education is most effective when adolescents are taught by their peers. To achieve a lasting improvement in young people’s health, DSW seeks to encourage political decisionmakers in the project countries to place greater importance on health care, particularly in the area of reproductive health, and to make more financial resources available. Together with local partners, our country offices work in tandem with parliamentarians, government representatives and local authorities to raise awareness of the close relationship between population development, poverty, health and protection of the environment in developing countries. DSW is politically and religiously independent. It relies on private donations and financial support from other organisations, foundations and agencies to carry out its project work.

DIL believes that no child in Pakistan, no matter how poor or underprivileged, should be denied access to quality education. All children should have equal opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute toward the socio-economic betterment of their communities. Female students consist of 60% of DIL’s student population. This is a great achievement given that the national literacy rate for women in Pakistan stands at only 38%. DIL operates under the auspices of a US-based Board of Directors and a Pakistan-based Board of Trustees. DIL was granted tax-exempt status 501 (c) (3) by the IRS in February 2000. DIL was registered in July 2000 in Pakistan under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and donations received in Pakistan are tax-exempt. All members of the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees are volunteers and serve without compensation.

The Devils in Danger Foundation (DIDF) is the only Foundation set up specifically to save the Tasmanian Devil on the Register for Environmental Organisations. We work in partnership with Federal and State Governments and all other key stakeholders to increase awareness of the plight of the Tasmanian Devil. We intend to facilitate or implement the appropriate steps to guard against extinction of the species. DIDF is coordinating the construction of a ‘No Injury Breeding Centre’ for Tasmanian Devils to be constructed in Tasmania. This Centre will provide the first centre of its kind in the world to sustainable breed disease free Tasmanian devils to maintain and preserve the genetics available in the captive population of devils, thereby making a major contribution to the prevention of the extinction of the species.

Hunger is not just a third world problem. Many people are living on the edge of poverty within our Kennet area. Over the last year more than 500 food boxes were issued right here to people in need. All it takes is low income and a sudden, unexpected event like a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, illness, redundancy or theft to throw people into a genuine crisis.
