Bont Voor Dieren
Animals/Wildlife
Bont voor Dieren campaigns against the production and use of fur by raising public awareness on issues such as animal cruelty and welfare, fur farming, trapping, sealing, dog and cat fur, karakul lambs and fur in fashion. We do so using entirely legal and non-violent means. Bont voor Dieren achieves its goals through political lobby at a local, national and European level, by persuading fashion designers and retailers to not include fur in their collections, through education and, of course, maintaining a high media profile. Bont voor Dieren is also active on an international level. We offer our support and information to organisations in other countries were fur is still widely worn. Our motto is ‘When you stop buying, the animals stop dying’. In other words, if fur is no longer traded anywhere in the world, the suffering of all fur-bearing animals at human hands will come to an end.
Book Aid International
Children/Education
We are one of the world's foremost library development charities and provide around half a million books to libraries sub-Saharan Africa and the Occupied Palestinian Territories every year. We support libraries in schools, refugee camps, prisons, universities, communities and more. As well as donating books, we also support libraries by providing grants for purchasing books locally, maintaining library buildings or training for library staff. We work with a wide range of partners in 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa who help us to ensure that the books we send match the local need and that they are distributed to the libraries and communities that need them the most. Books and libraries are a crucial resource in sub-Saharan Africa. They are vital for quality education; they raise literacy levels, provide information and underpin development.

BookRelief UK is a literacy charity that started life as a community group in Bideford, North Devon in October 2006 and became a registered charity in March 2010. As a literacy charity, BookRelief UK has coordinated several programmes in North Devon beginning with a North Devon Schools Reading Programme in 2007 delivered in association with the National Literacy Trust’s Reading is Fundamental programme. In 2011 BookRelief UK introduced and coordinated a one-to-one mentoring programme in the Bideford area for school children who are slow or reluctant readers – in association with Reading Matters of Bradford and the Bideford Learning Community. This programme has worked very successfully and will be extended over the 2013/14 academic year thanks to financial support we recently received from the Big Lottery Fund's Awards for All programme. In 2012 BookRelief UK began an association with Read Easy UK to introduce their very successful volunteer-led adult literacy programme - which delivers one-to-one literacy coaching to adults with reading difficulties - to the North Devon area. This began with a pilot programme in Barnstaple. As of November 2013 we are pleased to report that our Read Easy Barnstaple group has trained over 40 volunteer reading coaches and has over 40 new readers/learners undergoing one-to-one basic literacy tuition. In February 2013 we established Read Easy Bideford &Great Torrington and we are currently working to establish a Read Easy group in Ilfracombe. BookRelief UK also have programmes for collecting and storing used books – which are either sold to raise funds for local literacy programmes or sent abroad through our Books Overseas Programme – which is currently run in conjunction with Book-Cycle of Exeter.
Books for Africa
Children/Education
Books donated by publishers, schools, libraries, individuals, and organizations are sorted and packed by volunteers who carefully choose books that are age and subject appropriate. We send good books, enough books for a whole class to use. They are shipped in sea containers paid for by contributions from people like you. It costs about 50 cents to send a book from the United States to Africa. Since 1988, Books For Africa has shipped more than 22 million books to 45 African countries. They are on once-empty library shelves, in classrooms in rural schools, and in the hands of children who have never before held a book. Each book will be read over and over again. When the books arrive, they go to those who need them most: children who are hungry to read, hungry to learn, hungry to explore the world in ways that only books make possible.
Boomer's Legacy
Humanitarian Aid
The foundation has been developed to aid the women and children in Afghanistan, and in doing so we will honour all of our soldiers who have served there, especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. "Boomer's Legacy" is named in remembrance of Corporal Andrew James Eykelenboom, a Canadian military medic who was killed by a suicide bomber in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan in August 2006 at age 23. While serving in Afghanistan, Andrew (known to his friends as "Boomer") recognized numerous opportunities for assisting the Afghan people through the distribution of medical supplies, educational material, books and warm clothing. In small, personal ways, Boomer and his comrades felt they were able to make a special contribution to bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan. Boomer's Legacy has been created to further these accomplishments.
