Easter Seals, National Headquarters

Based in USA United States
Disability

In 1907, Ohio-businessman Edgar Allen lost his son in a streetcar accident. The lack of adequate medical services available to save his son prompted Allen to sell his business and begin a fund-raising campaign to build a hospital in his hometown of Elyria, Ohio. Through this new hospital, Allen was surprised to learn that children with disabilities were often hidden from public view. Inspired by this discovery, in 1919 Allen founded what became known as the National Society for Crippled Children, the first organization of its kind. Today, Easter Seals has been helping individuals with disabilities and special needs, and their families, live better lives for nearly 90 years. From child development centers to physical rehabilitation and job training for people with disabilities, Easter Seals offers a variety of services to help people with disabilities address life's challenges and achieve personal goals.

EastWest Institute

Based in USA United States
Research/Dev

The EastWest Institute is a global think-and-do tank that devises innovative solutions to pressing security concerns and mobilizes networks of individuals, institutions, and nations to implement these solutions. EWI was founded in 1980 when John Edwin Mroz and Ira Wallach set out to bridge divides across the Iron Curtain. With vast networks in political, military, and business establishments in the U.S., Europe, and the Soviet Union, EWI quickly established a reputation as a trusted convener with the ability to maintain lines of communication across divides when official channels failed to do so. We have continued our work in much the same spirit since 1989, but the "East" and "West" in our name no longer represent the political divisions of the Cold War. We have since expanded our work to become a global organization, working with the U.S., NATO, Turkey, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and many other countries in Europe and Asia.

Ebenezer Foundation

Based in FIN Finland
Children/Education

In 1995, the Ebeneser Foundation established the early childhood education-oriented Childhood Institute, the goal of which is to operate actively to maintain and promote the welfare of children. The Institute fulfils this mission in concert with other non-profit organisations, institutions of higher learning and research institutes. The Childhood Institute operates on principles of multidisciplinarity and cross-disciplinary research. The goal is to integrate scientific diversity on a theoretical-methodological level. In practice, the Institute achieves this principle by building and supporting research initiatives in which the principles of multidisciplinarity and cross-disciplinarity are set up as the foundation of the research. However, the principle does not necessarily entail large, far-reaching or expensive research projects. This principle can be followed in small-scale initiatives as well as in more far-reaching projects.
