ConTextos

Based in USA United States
Children/Education

Children in El Salvador lack access to books and learn via rote memorization. But books alone aren’t enough to change the culture of learning in countries like El Salvador. That’s why I started ConTextos. Inspired by a course in social entrepreneurship at Harvard Graduate School of Education, I founded ConTextos to go beyond traditional resource distribution to build capacity that engages kids in active learning, encouraging them to question and participate. After working as the Coordinator and Lead Author of El Salvador’s national teacher training strategy in literacy development—part of a regional effort in Central America—I knew how badly teachers needed support in the classroom. Based on my experience as a teacher in NYC, I knew what quality support looked like. Finally, by partnering with the private sector—Spanish-language book distributors, TACA airlines —I was able to cost-effectively bring resources that others can’t. As a 2013 Echoing Green Fellow, I have been recognized for leadership and ConTextos for social change innovation. The inspiration that helped me start ConTextos still drives me: making sure that every kid develops a love of learning, and that their teachers have the skills and resources to make that happen.

However, we do not go at it alone. We rely heavily on the faith-based community and national and state disaster relief agencies and organizations. We have also developed a disaster preparedness program to educate communities so that they can prepare for and respond to disasters.

Supported by broad layers of the Dutch population, they were able to support the work of hundreds of Dutch priests, nuns, brothers, and volunteers in their care for the whole of humanity. Cork Simon Community

Based in IRL Ireland
Community/Family

In 2008 Cork Simon Community supported almost 900 different people across all our projects and services - men and women ranging in age from 18 years to over 80 years. Accommodation alone will not solve homelessness. While the provision of a safe, secure and appropriate place to live forms a critical part of a person's journey out of homelessness, it needs to be backed-up with a range of different supports that will help people get their lives back on track. Those supports can range form being able to get access to healthcare to address many different physical and mental health issues, to getting timely help for people with addictions, to learning how to cope with difficult and stressful situations, to basic friendly support and a listening ear. Cork Simon reaches out to people who are sick, vulnerable and marginalised, people who are excluded from everyday activities that most of us take for granted.

Cornerstone Housing for Women Foundation

Based in CAN Canada
Women

We want to be leaders in naming and creating sustainable, future-oriented programs grounded in a belief that all women can change, grow and heal, that no one need remain trapped in the cycle of homelessness and soul-destroying dependence. We want to take up the challenge to partner with our residents to create a new set of options for a hopeful future. By June 2011, the new house to be owned and operated by the Cornerstone Foundation will provide permanent safe, affordable, supportive housing for 42 women who will live in self-contained apartment units in a building at 314 Booth Street. Twenty units will be allocated to low-income seniors and 22 to younger homeless women, many with a variety of disabilities, often the result of long-term life on the street. It has been a journey of challenges, disappointments, successes, time-consuming negotiations, long hours of planning, searches for government funding and collaboration with many partners.

Cornerstone Project

Based in USA United States
Children/Education

The organization was initially the vision of two women in Litchfield County Connecticut who saw the benefits in providing vulnerable children with opportunities during their childhood that would subsequently help them become valuable, contributing members of their communities as they reached adulthood. In particular, but not exclusively, these women were interested in furthering the work of the Nambale Magnet School (NMS) by assisting WIKS (WIKS is a non-governmental organization established Kenya (Africa) exclusively for charitable, scientific, and/or educational purposes.) The Nambale Magnet School is a residential school for vulnerable children often orphaned by the AIDS pandemic in the Nambale District of the Western Province of Kenya. Evalyn Wakhusama, a Kenyan woman who obtained her higher education in the US, is the founder of NMS and it is her vision that this school be designed and constructed in her childhood hometown in Nambale, Kenya to accommodate pre-school through 8th grade, and provides safe shelter for the vulnerable children in a loving and supportive environment. The school will eventually feature a conventional Kenyan primary educational curriculum along with an artisan program to provide education and training in specified career paths including agriculture and light industry. Cornerstone’s activities include, but are not limited to, raising funds for the Nambale Magnet School. We plan to use the Nambale Magnet School as a prototype for other projects that are financially and ecologically sustainable which will assist the disenfranchised to achieve empowerment in areas around the globe and in the United States. Cornerstone will, in time, include other projects that complement our mission statement in the United States and abroad. Other projects could include assistance with school facilities, foster homes, self sustaining ventures for the education and nurturing of the disenfranchised; particularly, but not limited to, children. Any project taken on by Cornerstone will exercise the greatest limit of environmental consciousness with the commitment to create new, innovative, alternative energy solutions whenever possible.
