Community/Family

Our history goes back to 1945, when the late Bishop Trevor Huddleston started soup kitchens in winter for hungry children in Alexandra and Soweto. The needs of the communities we serve have increased significantly in recent years; firstly, as a result of the scourge of HIV and AIDS which has left many families without breadwinners and – more recently – the global economic recession which has led to the loss of some 35 000 jobs nation wide every month. Against this background, the African Children's Feeding Scheme works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for those hardest hit – in particular orphans and vulnerable children, child-headed households and those in the care of elderly grandmothers.

ACLT
Based in GBR
United Kingdom
Health/Medical

The ACLT was established in June 1996 by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, the parents of Daniel 'Playzo' De-Gale. When the charity was initially set up, Daniel had already been suffering from Leukaemia for 3 years. Daniel's parents were informed that his only hope of survival was to receive a bone marrow transplant. Due to the fact that bone marrow contains racially specific characteristics, the compatible donor for Daniel could only be found within the black or mixed race population. Daniel finally won his battle against Leukaemia when on 16th June 1999 at the age of 12 he received a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated American donor, Doreene Carney, at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The charity raises awareness which enables potential donors to come forward at the ACLT registration drives to be involved in the process of offering hope and a healthy future to someone whose disorder may otherwise prove fatal. The ACLT has raised the numbers of potential Black/Mixed Race donors from 550 to approx. 33,000 and many lives have been saved in the process.

Action Against Hunger/Action Contre la Faim (ACF) was founded in France in 1979 to seek a less deferential role for humanitarian actors. We were looking for a brand of humanitarian politics that could influence political actors and outcomes, not just mitigate atrocities on the ground. While hunger had been addressed in general campaigns against poverty and poor public health, Action Against Hunger was established specifically to combat hunger worldwide, leading the way in defining the terrain, developing appropriate strategies, conducting vital field research, and delivering life-saving programs. ACF International has pursued its vision of a world without hunger for nearly three decades, combating hunger in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity. Our 6,000 field staff — seasoned professionals and technical experts in the fields of water and sanitation, food security, public health, and nutrition — work in over 40 countries to restore dignity, self-sufficiency, and independence to vulnerable populations around the world.
