Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Environment

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, Inc. (BIOS) is uniquely situated and excellently equipped for highly productive marine field research. Only 700 miles from the East Coast of the U.S., Bermuda is located on some of the world's northernmost coral reefs and surrounded by deep ocean. Significant research opportunities are presented by Bermuda's diversity of ecological communities: from limestone caves and mangroves to coral reefs and the Sargasso Sea. Moderate temperature of air and water make BIOS a year-round magnet for independent and collaborative research. Disciplines as diverse as marine invertebrate zoology, coral reef ecology, chemical and physical oceanography, animal physiology and carbonate geology are studied. We monitor atmospheric and marine pollution in Bermuda and their sources; and study the development of biomarkers to indicate the presence of environmental contaminants and stress in coral reef and other marine ecosystems.

Berry Street Inc

Based in AUS Australia
Children/Education

Berry Street looks after thousands of Victorian children and young people who have been denied the most vital ingredient for human development - a good childhood, those who cannot live safely at home because of traumatic family violence, serious abuse and neglect and those who will not recover from what has been done to them, unless they urgently receive the help they need and deserve. We need to act now, so that more children experience a good childhood that equips them to become healthy, functioning adults, so that our community will be a better, safer place to live for all of us - with less crime, mental illness, substance abuse, violence and homelessness. We choose to work with those children, young people and their families who are hurting the most and who have the most complex needs. We are absolutely determined to restore hope and trust to the lives of the children in our care.

Best Friends Animal Society

Based in USA United States
Animals/Wildlife

Best Friends Animal Society is guided by a simple philosophy: kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us. In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early days, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year. Despite the commitment of shelter workers to the animal in their care, the conventional belief was that little could be done to lower that terrible number. Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets campaign created a new vision: A grassroots effort to place dogs and cats who were considered "unadoptable" into good homes, and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs. Since then, the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters has fallen to approximately 5 million a year. There has been much progress, but there is still much more to do.

Mission of Mercy has seen great things during the past year. Great efforts have been made to serve the most needy people. Great distance have been traveled into the most remote and isolated places. Great medical help has been provided for the sick. Great teaching has been given on daily living , that a more healthy standard of life may be lived such places when visited later have shown that this teaching has not been in vain. Numbers with their medical skills and care, along with others rendering practical help, have sacrificed to make this possible and this must be appreciated. Above all the one in whose name all this has been done, the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, he has been presented to the people as the one who came into the world to save our souls and to care for us in all our daily need.

The Bethlehem Mission Immensee (BMI) is a catholic missionary organization with its headquarters in Immensee, Switzerland. It places itself at the service of the integral liberation of the disadvantaged in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. In the various countries where we have projects we work together with organizations of the church and of civil society. We provide skilled personnel for specific tasks for a limited time and we support them in their efforts to create links and to cooperate in processes of international solidarity. By this method of personnel development cooperation we help to build bridges to other cultures and religions. The source of our commitment and the motivation for our activity in this world is the liberating message of Jesus, His vision of a just and peaceful world. The signs of His prophetic and healing actions motivate us to work together as partners with people from other cultures and religions. For this reason we struggle together with them that the necessities of life be made available to all human beings and that their dignity and rights are respected.

They could have passively continued to witness the struggles, and to move forward in their daily lives, but they didn’t. Beyond Borders

Based in USA United States
Humanitarian Aid

Beyond Borders seeks to follow this Jesus by building bridges of sharing and understanding across the great divisions of our day. We do this to foster justice and peace and because we believe that the unique image of God in humanity is best seen in the mosaic of our diversity. Beyond Borders focuses on the division created by the growing economic disparity in our world. Our work both in Haiti and abroad has grown both in its quality and in its size. Initially our focus in Haiti was on directly funding literacy centers for children and adults. We have worked to improve the quality of education provided in these centers by promoting teacher training and more participatory program management, planning, and evaluation. More recently we have sought to increase our impact by sharing what we have been learning with other institutions and leaders in Haiti. We are providing training and leadership development to a growing number of teachers, literacy instructors, community organizers & church leaders. We are also taking leadership in a national children's rights campaign that seeks the elimination of child slavery and exploitation in Haiti. And most recently, we have begun working to bring understanding across the broken relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
