Sumangali Seva Ashrama

Based in IND India
Women

Set up in 1975 by two visionaries, Smt Susheelamma and Smt M Kanthamma, with little funds, but big dreams, the Sumangali Seva Ashram has, over the years, been a much sought-after sanctuary for thousands of women and children. A safe harbour for those buffeted by the storms of life. A quiet refuge for those with no place to call home. Remaining independent of all political and religious persuasions, this secular, not-for-profit organization has made it its mission to focus on the most vulnerable and most marginalized sections of society: orphans, widows, destitute women, the physically challenged, and the uncared-for aged. The team at Sumangali Seva Ashram, comprising social workers, activists and volunteers, carry out each task with compassion and quiet dedication, under the inspiring guidance and wise counsel of Smt Susheelamma who leads by example, working tirelessly to develop and promote a spirit of self-reliance amongst the residents of the Ashram, restore their dignity and empower them. Today, the serene environs of the Ashram at Cholanyakanahalli, Bangalore are home to 100 children, 30 destitute women and 16 senior citizens.

Sumatran Orangutan Society

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Animals/Wildlife

The Sumatran Orangutan Society is dedicated to the conservation of Sumatran orangutans and their forest home. Our international branches raise awareness of the threats facing wild orangutans, and raise funds to support grassroots conservation projects in Sumatra. Together with a team of committed Indonesian conservationists, we work with local communities living alongside orangutan habitat. We visit schools, plant trees and provide training to help the local people work towards a more sustainable future for their forests. We promote public awareness of threats to, and conservation strategies for, the Sumatran orangutan, through community education and global communication. We collaborate with other international and local NGOs and businesses working towards parallel goals and fundraise to support SOS's aims and projects. Our projects address conservation priorities for the forests, biodiversity and communities of northern Sumatra. These include rainforest restoration, ecotourism development programmes adjacent to the Gunung Leuser National Park, and the creation of a network of "conservation villages" which serve as models of conservation-oriented living, promoting environmental education and habitat protection, whilst supporting the development of sustainable livelihoods.

As we move forward, researchers and scientists offer technological advances that promise to revolutionize transfusion medicine and the growing field of cellular therapy.

Survival

Based in ESP Spain
Ethnic/Religion

Survival is the only international organization supporting tribal peoples worldwide. We were founded in 1969 after an article by Norman Lewis in the UK’s Sunday Times highlighted the massacres, land thefts and genocide taking place in Brazilian Amazonia. Like many modern atrocities, the racist oppression of Brazil’s Indians took place in the name of ‘economic growth’. Today, Survival has supporters in 82 countries. We work for tribal peoples’ rights in three complementary ways: education, advocacy and campaigns. We also offer tribal people themselves a platform to address the world. We work closely with local indigenous organizations, and focus on tribal peoples who have the most to lose, usually those most recently in contact with the outside world. We believe that public opinion is the most effective force for change. Its power will make it harder, and eventually impossible, for governments and companies to oppress tribal peoples.
