Children/Education

Founded in 1924 as Chicago’s College of Jewish Studies, Spertus Institute today offers an innovative, non-denominational array of specialized and public programming, grounded in Jewish thought, inspired by Jewish values, and resolutely relevant to people’s lives. Spertus offers accredited graduate-level degree programs in areas that are critical to the Jewish and wider communities—including Jewish studies, leadership training, and nonprofit management. Recognizing that learning is sparked by many points of entry, programming at Spertus also includes cultural and continuing education offerings, such as lectures, seminars, exhibits, concerts, and films. Partnerships and collaborative relationships in the Jewish, academic, philanthropic, and cultural arenas further allow Spertus to serve as a portal for diverse learning opportunities. The Institute cultivates an atmosphere of lively discourse. We often hear from students and participants that their experiences at Spertus are inspiring and even transformative. That is by design, because the Institute pursues cutting-edge best practice in everything it does. Sponsor a Nurse

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Health/Medical

Sponsor a Nurse is a charity set up in 2000 to help Kisiizi Hospital in Uganda. One of the main problems the hospital has is finding enough money to meet its running costs each month. The main running cost is staff wages. It was therefore decided that the Charity would help to fund these running costs primarily by supporting the nurses' wage bill. We considered that as the hospital has problems with recruitment and retention, (due to the remote location and competition from government hospitals which can afford to pay higher wages) we would support any incentives which would specifically address these issues. We now fund a monthly food parcel which is given to all staff. The Ugandan government have allowed it to be a tax free benefit and the hospital can purchase these comodities economically by bulk buying.

Somali Poverty Relief and Rural Development Organization (SPRRDO) believes that the problems in Somalia emanate from lack of education and information. Educating the children will inform the young generation that there are alternatives to war and destruction. Conveying this message to the current militia men and bandits terrorizing the people is quite difficult if not impossible. That is why we are targeting school age children in order to save the next generation. By education the young, we are also creating an educated work force which can develop the natural resources of the country.

From our humble beginnings, and after many years of hard work and fundraising, we now have a shelter at Fair Oak, which has the capacity to house approximately 15 dogs, 50 cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and 30 resident cats. Also permanent residents at the shelter are a horse, a pony, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, deer, parrots and geese. As well as taking in unwanted domestic pets from members of the public, and stray dogs from the local council, we are regularly called out to rescue injured or orphaned wildlife, including deer and foxes. We release any wildlife after a period of treatment and rehabilitation, where possible.
