Rescued Animals In Need

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Animals/Wildlife

Rescued Animals in Need is made up of a group of hard working volunteers in the Sevenoaks area. Animals find their way to RAIN for all kinds of reasons. They are found straying; are left behind at the vets after an accident; are either left in a house or locked out of it when people move away; need new homes when elderly people die or move into residential care; or are unwanted due to changes in family circumstances. As soon as animals come into RAIN's care they are taken to a Veterinary Surgeon where they receive any necessary attention. All animals are vaccinated and neutered, if this has not already been done, and are routinely treated for worms and fleas. On veterinary advice, any cats felt to be at risk are blood-tested for certain diseases. Animals are then settled into the cattery, kennels or foster home and cared for whilst a permanent home is sought for them. Homes are sought for the animals through advertising and in local papers. As RAIN does not have its own Sanctuary, other means of caring or the animals have to be found. It is our ultimate aim to have a Sanctuary of our own, but have to face the fact that we would need an enormous windfall to achieve this in the foreseeable future. The charity also has contacts with welfare organisations dealing with wild animals, birds, and other animals.

Restavek Freedom Foundation

Based in USA United States
Children/Education

Haiti has a culturally accepted system of domestic servitude known as restavek. Nearly one in ten children lives in restavek, a form of modern day child slavery. Not only are these children worked to exhaustion, in most cases they are denied education and are isolated from family and communities. Children in restavek need hope. Restavek Freedom is working in Haiti and around the world to advocate for the education and better treatment of children living in restavek. Being able to go to school changes the course of a child’s life and opens the door to freedom. We identify restavek children and work with their owners to allow them to release the child to attend school. Through generous child sponsors, we pay for our children's school tuition, provide a school uniform and required books, and give one meal a day. Our Child Advocates continually monitor the health and well-being of the children in our program. In addition to working directly with almost 500 children, we also work with biological and host parents to influence their attitudes and behaviors toward children and we mobilize people in Haiti and around the world to stand up for the rights and freedom of ALL children.
