In 1961, a young doctor from San Diego volunteering at a Tijuana clinic saved the lives of two small children who were dying of pneumonia. This experience led Dr. Jim Turpin to found Project Concern International and forever change the lives of millions of children around the world by providing health and poverty solutions. Today, the underlying vision of the organization has remained true to its founder: Project Concern works in vulnerable communities by preventing disease, providing poverty solutions and creating long-term change by helping people to help themselves. But there is still much to be done. Please lend you voice and spread our message of global concern. Each of us can make a difference...one child at a time.

In 2004, four Indianapolis volunteers conceived Project Home Indy as a sustainable model for a holistic residential program serving the at-risk population of homeless teen mothers and their children. Unlike the more common maternity home model, Project Home Indy provides a long-term residential environment where program opportunities are structured based on a person-centered case management framework. Our program aims to break the cycle of poverty. Project Home Indy supports teen mother’s need for a safe and healthy environment to encourage individual and family success. In addition to extended-stay residential services in a safe, structured and supportive environment, Project Home Indy offers each teen a comprehensive assessment designed to determine the appropriate type and intensity of services needed for her.

We’re a New Zealand organisation, with a distinct flavour and feel. We pride ourselves on being passionate, honest, open and down to earth. We exist for one simple reason – marine mammals desperately need our help. Our strength comes from our volunteers; everyday Kiwis that give up their time to help marine mammals through our rescue, action and protection programs. Whether they’re picking up litter on beaches or getting hands on in rescuing stranded whales, they’re out there helping.

We educate those who will spread their knowledge and skills back to Burma for its future development. The need is urgent: in 1988, the military government closed all the schools, colleges and universities in Burma following the peaceful student-led demonstrations for democracy in 1988, which were brutally put down. Although the universities are periodically reopened, they remain subject to arbitrary closure. Those that are open are subject to repressive military control, and they are cripplingly under equipped: for instance, one class of 400 medical students had six text-books between them, published in the 1960s. The reality within Burma is that a whole generation of young people has been deprived of the opportunity of education, and the effect on Burma's future is incalculable. In response to this, we give scholarships to gifted and needy Burmese students to study at universities outside Burma, many of whom are refugees.

Human Rights
Public Citizen serves as the people’s voice in the nation’s capital. Since our founding in 1971, we have delved into an array of areas, but our work on each issue shares an overarching goal: To ensure that all citizens are represented in the halls of power. For nearly four decades, we have proudly championed citizen interests before Congress, We have successfully challenged the abusive practices of the pharmaceutical, nuclear and automobile industries, and so many others. We are leading the charge against undemocratic trade agreements that advance the interests of mega-corporations at the expense of citizens worldwide. As the federal government wrestles with critical issues – fallout from the global economic crisis, health care reform, climate change and so much more – Public Citizen is needed now more than ever. We are the countervailing force to corporate power. We fight on behalf of all Americans – to make sure your government works for you.
