Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Animals/Wildlife

Holly Hedge Sanctuary was first registered as a charity in 1982, but until 1992, when kennels were purchased and became Holly Hedge Sanctuary, Pauline, the founder, worked from her own home and with the support of foster carers. Her aim has always been to provide a safe haven for animals until caring permanent owners can be found and this continues to be the purpose of the charity today. The accommodation at Holly Hedge Sanctuary is of a very high standard and our rescued animals get the best care, comfort and veterinary treatment when needed. They also get lots of exercise and love. Our team of dedicated staff work tirelessly to ensure their stay with us is as pleasant as possible. We pride ourselves on maintaining exceptional standards and our re-homing policies have been set, with the benefit of years of experience, to maximise the chances of the animals staying with their new owners for life. Sick, badly neglected and elderly animals are placed in foster homes until they can be rehomed, as they benefit from individual attention in a home environment. The numbers of animals that have arrived in poor health and with ongoing medical expenses has increased dramatically as have cases of abuse and neglect.

Once an animal comes to us, it truly has a home for life. We believe that animals should live in a setting that is appropriately scaled to allow for individual attention and specialized care. This is why Home For Life® is able to give its residents a quality life and not just a warehoused existence.

Home From Home Trust

Based in ZAF South Africa
Children/Education

Home from Home Trust was registered in May 2005 and much has been achieved since this date. The Trust was set up by Jane Payne and Pippa Shaper, who had both worked with this model of care for the past five years and saw the profound benefits for orphans and vulnerable children. Believing that this model of care provided a viable alternative to institutionalized child-care, the Home from Home Trust was formed with the support of other interested parties. Home from Home now has ten homes open and is currently caring for 72 children. Several more homes will be opening within the next few months in conjunction with community partners. We also run the Lizo Nobanda Day Care Centre in Harare, Khayelitsha, providing pre-school care for the under 6's, about a third of whom live in Home from Home houses, the others being from the local community. This facility cares for 60 children on a daily basis.

Home-Start UK

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Community/Family

Home-Start offers a unique service. We recruit and train volunteers who are usually parents themselves to visit families with at least one child under five, at home, and offer them informal, friendly and confidential support. We help to increase the confidence and independence of families by visiting them in their own homes to offer support, friendship and practical assistance, we reassure parents that their childcare problems are not unusual or unique. We encourage parents' strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their children and try to get the fun back into family life. When Home-Start was founded in 1973 no-one involved in this unique parent-to-parent support service imagined that one local Home-Start in Leicester would be so effective and so popular with families that it would expand to more than 300 within 30 years. It did and now Home-Start is the UK's leading family support charity and is expanding into even more areas of the UK.

Homeless International

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Research/Dev

All the initiatives supported by Homeless International are implemented by local partner organisations who support community based organisations. By supporting local organisations rather than implementing projects directly, we are able to help build up local capacity and ensure the sustainability of the work. Advocacy is often a rather abstract activity, based around talk as opposed to action. Homeless International recognises the value of laying claim to rights, and of calling governments to account, but we believe that this is most effectively done where dialogue takes place in parallel with practical demonstrations of community capacity.
