Half the Sky Foundation

Based in USA United States
Children/Education

We provide individual nurture and stimulation for babies, innovative preschools that encourage an early love of learning, personalized learning opportunities for older children, and loving — and most important, permanent — foster homes for children whose special needs will keep them from being adopted. For the children who will never be adopted, Half the Sky programs are the closest thing they will ever receive to the love and support of a birth family. Orphanage caregivers are too often over-worked and under-trained. Too often, there is no one else to provide the children with the developmental opportunities (and love!) that every child needs and deserves. Thousands of children are now enrolled in Half the Sky’s five programs that provide love and hope for children living in China’s orphanages.

Hamilton College

Based in USA United States
Children/Education

Hamilton is a national leader in teaching students to write effectively, learn from each other and think for themselves. Hamilton College had its beginnings in a plan of education drawn up by Samuel Kirkland, missionary to the Oneida Indians. The heart of the plan was a school for the children of the Oneidas and of the white settlers, who were then streaming into central New York from New England in search of new lands and opportunities in the wake of the American Revolution. The College that evolved from Samuel Kirkland's plan of education will soon celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of its charter. Far from the modest frontier school for white and Oneida Indian children that the missionary envisioned, it has become an institution of higher education that draws its students from all areas of our country and even beyond our borders. Although Hamilton remains small by present-day standards and currently has a student body of fewer than 1,900, it provides resources and facilities comparable to those of undergraduate institutions substantially larger in size.

Harembee Schools Kenya - HSK

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Research/Dev

We work in the central highlands of Kenya, in the hills around the town of Gilgil. We have years of experience in the area. We have an excellent reputation around Gilgil, and in addition we have contacts in many different spheres. We aim to improve the physical state of schools by funding construction projects and providing textbooks; we believe that projects must have full community support and involvement if they are to have an impact and be truly sustainable. Their involvement also means that improvements made are maintained and looked after so that they do not fall into disrepair. We build capacity within local economies to supply schools with the services that they need, while supporting local entrepreneurs. For example, the young carpenter whom we trained to make high quality, durable furniture for HSK has had so much work recently that he has been able to train and employ three former street boys.
