Charity Bolivia

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Children/Education

Charity Bolivia is a UK registered non-profit organisation set up to raise money to help relieve poverty and improve standards of living in Bolivia, one of the world's poorest nations. Colonia Ecologica is our main project on the outskirts of Cochabamba, the third biggest city in Bolivia. There are seventeen children living there - orphans, children abandoned by their parents, or former street children. During the afternoon, up to thirty five more children arrive after school, to be looked after while their parents are earning money for basic daily needs. Colonia Ecologica offers prevention, protection and promotion: preventing more children turning to street life, protection and safety in a happy family and promotion of responsibility and moral values.

Charity: Water

Based in USA United States
Environment

We give 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need. Just $20 can give one person in a developing nation clean water for 20 years. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many people in the developing world, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to fetch water that is likely to make them sick.

Since 1970, Charlford House has provided a supportive recovery home for women who are ready to move on from their substance addiction. Charlford House is a non-profit residence: not an institution. All of our empathetic staff have had personal experience with addiction, but have been clean and sober for a long time. They have all had formal education and training that equips them to help others on the path to recovery. The women who come to our home are embarking on a journey to recovery, needing the safe and structured support of professional staff and peers. For this reason, we are situated in a family-oriented neighbourhood in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Chauncy Maples Trust

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Research/Dev

The Chauncy Maples Trust has been established in UK to raise money to match the contribution made by the Malawi government. Moored on Lake Malawi is the steamer Chauncy Maples. Built in Glasgow in 1898, she is the oldest ship in Africa still afloat. Once funding is provided, the renovation of Chauncy Maples will take about two years. The project will be run by the Government of Malawi with support from donors in Malawi and Britain. Malawi in Central Africa is a quiet, peaceful country of immense beauty. However, it is one of the ten poorest nations in the world, with high rates of malaria, HIV-AIDS and tuberculosis. Healthy life expectancy at birth is 35 years. Lake Malawi makes up a fifth of the country. For most of the thousand miles of shoreline there is no road and no access to health services for about four million lake dwellers. When desperate for healthcare, many travel by dug-out canoe, risking the dangerous currents, storms and crocodiles.

Cheetah Outreach

Based in ZAF South Africa
Animals/Wildlife

It took 4 million years of evolution for the cheetah to become the exceptional animal it is today and only 100 years for man to place it on the endangered list. Now the fastest land animal in the world is losing its most important race: the race for survival. At the turn of the 20th century, an estimated 100,000 cheetahs lived throughout Africa and in parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. Today there are just 7,500 cheetahs left and South Africa is home to fewer than 1,000 of these majestic cats. Cheetah Outreach is an education and community-based programme created to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah and to campaign for its survival. Founder Annie Beckhelling launched the project in January 1997 with just one hectare of land proved by Spier Wine Estate and two cheetahs.

Each summer we provide month long recuperative holidays in the UK for about 150 children from Belarus. We organise a holiday in a clean part of Belarus for children with disabilities from orphanages, sending volunteers out from Britain to make sure the kids have a great holiday. We deliver four convoys of humanitarian aid to Belarus every year. We also purchase urgently needed medicines for the Children's Cancer Hospital in Minsk and support the Children’s Hospice Movement. During the last ten years we have had a major training programme which has helped to reduce the numbers of children in the orphanages, to prepare suitable local foster families and to help children prepare for leaving care. Much of our work focuses on improving the educational and social opportunities for children and young people with disabilities.

Cherokee National Historical Society

Based in USA United States
Ethnic/Religion

The Cherokee National Historical Society was formed in 1963 by a group of visionary Cherokee citizens who shared a desire to establish a permanent culture keeping institution for the Cherokee people. To accomplish their goals, they secured forty-four wooded acres near Tahlequah, Oklahoma the seat of the Cherokee Nation, and established the Cherokee Heritage Center. The site was selected for its historical connection to the Nation, as it was once the location of the Cherokee Female Seminary, established by the Cherokee Nation in 1850 as one of the first institutions of higher learning for women west of the Mississippi River. Trustees continued to translate their vision into programs which today encompass: a reconstructed Ancient Village which opened in May 1967 followed with the opening of an 1800 seat amphitheater in June 1969; and the Cherokee National Museum in 1974 which now houses the award- winning Trail of Tears exhibition. Also included with the museum is a reconstructed Indian Territory-period town (Adams Corner). The museum also houses the Cherokee National Archives, the Cherokee Family Research Center. CNHS offers other interpretive programs and features as well, such as educational workshops and special events, which support their goal for the preservation and promulgation of the Cherokee culture.

Cherubs UK

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Disability

Cherubs UK was founded and registered with the Charity Commission in 2003 by Brenda Lane. It was initially formed as a small support group to provide parents and families faced with a CDH diagnosis with a friendly and informal support network of other parents and families who had endured similar experiences, and who could offer emotional support and share experiences with them. Today Cherubs UK has grown into an established charity that still offers the same friendly, informal support, but that now also has many more resources and offers information and advice on CDH from diagnosis to childhood and beyond, through different types of media such as the internet and written publications.
