Born Free Foundation
Animals/Wildlife
From small beginnings, the Born Free Foundation has grown into a global force for wildlife. But a personal passion for wild animals and desire for positive change remain at our heart. Described by The Times as 'Big enough to make a difference, but small enough to care,' Born Free is not a big anonymous organisation, but a family of like-minded people who share the same goals. Our work to prevent individual animal suffering, protect threatened species and keep wildlife in the wild sets us apart from the rest. Learn more about Born Free history here. Born Free never forgets the individual. Every animal counts. Our emergency teams rescue vulnerable animals from appalling lives of misery in tiny cages and give them lifetime care at spacious sanctuaries. Born Free saves orphaned big cats, great apes and elephants and provides their food and care.

Bothar
Research/Dev
Bóthar establishes families in micro-farming units by giving them the living gift of a farm animal. However, this gift is given as the last stage of a long and important process. Bóthar works through local community groups these groups vary immensely in size and form. These groups vary from being church groups to a group of neighbours who have come together to support each other and seek solutions to common problems that they all face. Together with our project partners, Bóthar ensures that all families are equipped with the knowledge and skills to manage the animal. The majority of farmers that receive Bóthar animals are illiterate, and unfamiliar with a classroom situation, so training is done in groups using picture cards, demonstrations and stories to aid in explanation.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Children/Education
Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with several women in Hartford, Conn. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. A cause was born. Boys & Girls Clubs of America believes that character development, the basic building block in personal development, should be an integral aspect of every Club program and activity. In support of this conviction, Aaron Fahringer, a regional director for the west coast in the 1950s, scripted the Boys & Girls Club Code as part of the celebration of the golden anniversary of the Movement. The code was adopted as official by the National Council in 1955, and was used extensively in the 50s and 60s. The Code is still displayed in many Clubs today.
