BBC Wildlife Fund is a distinctive conservation charity. We strive to do two things: protect endangered wildlife and support the people that live alongside these wonderful creatures and plants. That’s because we do not think that caring for wildlife and caring for people should be mutually exclusive. We do not just fund projects that protect endangered animals and plants and the wild places they need. We also try to protect and improve the natural habitats that wildlife and humans share. We do this by taking the opportunity where we can to make an impact on human poverty and quality of life issues as well as on the conservation of wildlife.

BeadforLife

Based in UGA Uganda
Microfinance

BeadforLife eradicates extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens. Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads, and people who care open their hearts, homes and communities to buy and sell the beads. The beads thus become income, food, medicine, school fees and hope. Our beaders and tailors are primarily impoverished women who are hardworking, intelligent, and strong in their desire to improve their lives. They make gorgeous handcrafted paper beads from recycled paper and turn them into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Because the beaders use recycled, colorful paper, the beads help prevent environmental degradation. What was trash becomes beauty, money, food, and hope. It is a small miracle that enriches us all. Our goal is for our members to be independent of BeadforLife within 27 months by being able to support themselves within the Ugandan economy. To assist members in launching their own small businesses or in creating new revenue streams, we provide entrepreneurial training, facilitate savings accounts, and make business funds available.

Since the Trust was formed the bird collection in particular has advanced from a few peacocks to one of the foremost collections in Europe. The main source of funding for these important projects is from ticket receipts at the gate so Beale Park relies on its visitors more than ever before. Visitors are helping conserve rare and endangered birds just by coming to see the collection and enjoying a day out at this traditional wildlife park.

Bear Valley Rescue

Based in CAN Canada
Animals/Wildlife

We are located in west-central Alberta, on 40 acres. We are so fortunate to have understanding neighbours that are very generous in helping out, mainly by donating the use of land for pasture for the horses. If we can find homes for these animals, we can go out and save more of them. It is really sad the number of good horses that end up being slaughtered because no one wants them. All our animals are wormed and vaccinated regularly. They are friendly, even if they haven't been worked with much. We save from slaughter usable and healthy horses and find them good homes, we rescue injured or ailing animals from auctions and feedlots or abusive situations and rehabilitate them, or alleviate their suffering. We also educate the public on the plight of unwanted or aging horses and other animals.
