Barth Syndrome Foundation Of Canada

Based in CAN Canada
Research/Dev

Barth syndrome is a rare but serious x-linked genetic disorder, primarily affecting males. It is caused by a mutation in the tafazzin gene resulting in an inborn error of lipid metabolism. Barth Syndrome Foundation Of Canada's major focuses are to provide hope for the future through funding research grants into the cause, treatments and a cure for the disease, and hope for today through our services and programs that assist both Canadian families and physicians. We also work with other Canadian charities where we have common goals for our member groups.

Barts and The London Charity

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Research/Dev

We are an independent charity, governed by a highly qualified board of trustees and advisors. The Charity is dedicated to supporting the patients treated at Barts and The London NHS Trust. The Charity only supports innovative projects that would not be funded by the NHS. This year, in addition to our historical commitment, we have allocated a further £7 million to new projects. However, we receive requests for at least twice this amount, which is why we seek partnerships with external donors. Over the past nine years, we have provided more than £150 million via grants and fundraising.

Environment

The world needs significant investment to cover the growing demand for energy. In the interest of the global climate, the local environment, and energy security, investment in energy must be steered towards energy options with less carbon, less fuel and fuel-price risk, and more and better access for the poor. The business and finance sectors have a key role to play in promoting the shift to a sustainable energy future. BASE provides information, develops tools, and builds networks with the goal of increasing investment in sustainable energy. BASE is a Collaborating Centre of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Basic Health International Foundation

Based in CAN Canada
Research/Dev

Basic Health International Foundation was set up as a result of many years of traveling in some of these high altitude areas and seeing some of the large medical needs of some of these communities. Being remote and isolated many of these communities are often off the "radar screen" of national health programs. Remoteness, transportation, infrastructure, geography, weather are often barriers to adequate health care to these communities. People living at such altitudes have to cope with a harsh climate and often marginalized crop potential. Access to good nutrition, good education and medical care is often compromised in many of these communities.

Basically Babies

Based in CAN Canada
Community/Family

Basically Babies is a registered charity that works to provide for the basic outfitting needs of newborn babies born to families in extreme need in the greater Edmonton area. We offer the gift of a complete first year's wardrobe for these infants in the form of a beautiful color-coordinated basket filled with clothing, outerwear, blankets, toys, storybooks, sleepers, undershirts, footwear and other baby essentials. We call these packaged gifts "layettes". The layettes we provide contain 90 to 110 items which, if purchased new, would cost well in excess of $1,100. While some of our items are new, we utilize a significant amount of gently-used clothing and baby items donated to us in excellent and "like-new" condition for this purpose. Our full year wardrobes are delivered to the recipient families through a variety of charitable organizations, non-profit groups, social service agencies and health care agencies who are working with these families on a long-term basis to develop and build life skills.

BasicNeeds

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Disability

BasicNeeds works to bring about a lasting change in the lives of mentally ill people around the world. Mental illness is a problem that is often ignored and this is especially the case in the poorest countries in the world. With an often complete lack of locally available, free mental health care, desperately poor mentally ill people stand little hope of recovery. Working with mentally ill people, rather than just for them, we have built an innovative approach to the problem that tackles mentally ill peoples' poverty, as well as their illness. Using the Model for Mental Health and Development, we help mentally ill people start to earn a living after they have been given access to regular, community-based treatment. We also work with communities to overcome stigma and abuse. At the heart of our work is consultation with mentally ill people and the drive to work with them to help them solve their problems. So far we have helped transform the lives of tens of thousands of mentally ill people.
