The Barn Owl Trust

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Animals/Wildlife

The Barn Owl Trust is a small charity working very hard to conserve one of the most beautiful birds on earth. Anyone who has ever watched a Barn Owl hunting at dusk has surely been touched by the experience but sadly these magical birds have become increasingly rare - and the reasons are all man-made. Lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest sites, road mortality, and a host of other factors are to blame. The Trust was founded by a small group of volunteers who believed not only that they could reverse this decline through practical conservation work, but also that they could use people's interest in the Barn Owl to increase environmental awareness.

The Beit Trust

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Research/Dev

Today the Trust is engaged in making grants within its "Beneficial Area" - namely Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe for Health, Education, Welfare and Environmental projects. The Trustees have always given preference to funding buildings and infrastructure. Grants are occasionally given for very large new constructions, such as bridges, hospitals, or schools, but generally most projects are chosen with the purpose of enhancing existing establishments or programmes, such as independent, rural, or mission schools, hospitals, or wildlife schemes. It does not make grants for vehicles, and very seldom makes grants to other grant-making organisations While recognising the pressing need, the Trustees are aware of the help given to AIDS alleviation and orphanages by other major donors, and, therefore, set limits to the Trust’s assistance with the pandemic. The Trust also provides a limited number of scholarships for postgraduate courses at universities in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or South Africa.

Community/Family

The Benevolent Society is Australia’s first charity, founded in 1813 by Edward Smith Hall. Since our earliest days we have advocated for positive social change and progressive social policy. We support people across the lifespan to build on their strengths and lead happy and fulfilling lives. We help to connect communities through support groups, volunteer visiting programs and community projects. Our vision is that every person is healthy, safe, connected and has a meaningful and productive role in their community.

The Bhopal Medical Appeal

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Health/Medical

The Bhopal Medical Appeal was launched in 1994, when a man from Bhopal came to Britain to tell whoever would listen about the calamitous condition of the still suffering victims of the Union Carbide gas disaster. Those who met him learned that after ten years, the survivors had received no meaningful medical help. The survivors realised that they must help themselves, because nobody else would. They wanted to open their own free clinic for gas victims. They were joined in the UK by a few individuals who put the mechanics of the Appeal together. They were in turn joined in this effort by other like minded people. Our first project was to open the clinic in Bhopal. To this end, the Sambhavna Trust was formed in India to run the clinic. Working together, we were able to buy a building, recruit doctors and staff.

The Bill Woodley Mount Kenya Trust

Based in KEN Kenya
Environment

Mount Kenya is an internationally significant protected area inscribed in 1997 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The World Heritage Commission recognised Mount Kenya as "one of the most impressive landscapes of Eastern Africa. To the people of Kenya it holds immense cultural value and is a vital and irreplaceable lifeline. The forest zone is the largest remaining in Kenya and its ecosystem as a whole plays a critical role in water catchment for two main rivers in the country, the Tana and Ewaso Ngiro. Millions of Kenyan's depend directly on these rivers for their livelihoods. The Tana also supplies over 55% of Kenya's power to the national grid. Mount Kenya's forests are under extreme threat from human induced illegal activities such as extensive poaching of wildlife, devastating logging of indigenous tree species, charcoal production, over-grazing, and large scale growing of marijuana. We concentrate preservation efforts at the field level for maximum impact while fencing critical forest areas in order to minimise human-wildlife conflict.

We work to make sure that high blood pressure is at the top of everyone's health agenda: within the Government, among health professionals, in the media and for every adult in the UK, particularly those at risk from high blood pressure.

The Blue Card

Based in USA United States
Ethnic/Religion

The Blue Card is an exceptional and unique national non-profit organization that was founded in 1934 in Germany to help Jews who were fleeing from that country. When many Jewish community funds are moving toward memorials for the Holocaust, education programs, and other causes altogether, The Blue Card has only one mission; to get much-needed funds either on an emergency basis or as an ongoing stipend to needy Holocaust survivors often with no surviving family. To date, we have provided over 18 million dollars to thousands upon thousands of survivors and their families. The Blue Card provides help and comfort to many people from many countries. Every story is unique and yet they all have a great need, which stretches beyond the traditional safety nets.

The British Paraorchestra

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Arts/Culture

An orchestra defined by what you hear, not what you see, the British Paraorchestra is levelling the playing field of musical excellence. Founded by British conductor Charles Hazlewood, the British Paraorchestra is pioneering a global movement to recognise and showcase disabled musicians with extraordinary abilities. There is no platform for musicians with disability, very little in the way of funding - and therefore access to the often-necessary technologies: it is virtually impossible for anyone from this community to make a living as a professional musician. Paraorchestra is a vitally needed platform, and source of work. If more paraorchestras emerge, more and more musicians will develop, will earn a living from their talent, and will of course end up in the great musical institutions of the world.
