Life For All Refilwe
Based in ZAF
South Africa
Research/Dev

The lives of Dr. Albert Schweitzer and Mother Theresa and their work with poor people inspired Jean Stewart as a little girl. Her friend and co-founder, Yvonne Jaques, told her about a one hectare site in Drummond south of Lanseria Airport which they consequently rented from the Methodist Church. From 1991 to 2005 they established a primary health care clinic which incorporated home based care and Tuberculosis management programs, a hospice, a school and a shelter for abandoned children. This was done with the help of numerous volunteers and donors. The site became too small for all the activities and the project site moved to the present project area north of Lanseria Airport during 2005.

Life Through Art Foundation
Based in USA
United States
Arts/Culture

The arts encourage learning as a process of discovery that engages the whole child – body, mind, and heart. Research has shown that exposure and learning in the arts nurtures the development of cognitive, social, and personal competencies. In pursuing our goal to provide children and young artists with meaningful and beneficial educational experiences in the arts, the Life Through Art Foundation has developed programs that are meant to engage students on multiple levels. The first step in opening a child’s world to the arts is exposing them to the diversity of artistic mediums that exist. By sending children to museums, concerts, plays, and galleries, the Life Through Art Field Trip program provides public school children with opportunities to see, hear, and experience the arts first hand. Life Through Art Foundation has created a multi-tiered educational partnership program. The Innovation Program was created for teachers interested in exploring their own creativity in building bridges between the arts and other disciplines. The program teaches these educators how they can harness creative expression by establishing a safe, supportive environment where their students can create and learn more about art.

Lifeforce Foundation
Based in CAN
Canada
Animals/Wildlife

Lifeforce is a non-profit Vancouver based ecology organization that was formed in 1981. We promote animal rights and ecological responsibility. In order to develop a non-violent society we must extend our circle of compassion to include all sentient creatures with whom we share this planet. We are based in Canada but our work has no boundaries. As part of Lifeforce's work, we have developed a new concept called "Health Rights". This concept reinforces the basic principle that all sentient beings - human and non-human - are entitled to a healthy life. Unethical, unnecessary scientific experiments using "animal models" (taking healthy animals and inflicting on them human diseases and injuries) are a violation of Health Rights. We support the study of naturally-occurring maladies through research that is conducted humanely and is scientifically justifiable.

Lifehouse
Based in AUS
Australia
Community/Family

We began planning a response to the growing number of young people at risk of homelessness and teenage parenting, back in 2002. We began thinking and praying about what we could do, planning, researching and networking to gain a better understanding of the issues and the need. Homelessness is a crisis situation many young people and young parents face, with a lack of affordable accommodation and a great shortage of supported accommodation on the Gold Coast, many find themselves living in unsuitable or crisis accommodation and turning to crime, prostitution or drugs to cope with their situation. We realised that Lifehouse Project could provide support to young people and make a difference in our community.

LIFEWISE is an Auckland-based community organisation initiating new ways to solve challenging social issues and providing services to families in need, the homeless as well as older and disabled people. We can trace our roots back over 150 years as part of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, meeting the changing needs of Aucklanders as the city grew and developed. Today we are recognised for our work in providing sustainable solutions to social issues rather than putting a ‘band aid’ on the problem. This means providing the services and support needed for individuals and families to improve their future, as well as supporting communities who are developing their own ways to meet their social needs.
