Algerian Action

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Community/Family

Algerian Action was set up by me, Emma Waller almost five years ago. It all started after a holiday to Algeria, my husband is Algerian and we went to visit his family. I found it to be such a beautiful place with warm, friendly people-we had a great time! But one thing really stuck with me, the children didn't seem to have much 'stuff', in terms of clothing and especially toys. When I compared my childhood the difference was stark. At that point I decided that I wanted to do something to help, when I had more time. That time came when I went on maternity leave from my job. I decided to start a little project that would collect unwanted toys and clothing and distribute them to needy children in Algeria. Since that time so many things have been donated, especially from the crafting community-knitters and crocheters have been so generous! Not all people living in Algeria are poor, the country itself is rich in oil and gas and there are many people who enjoy very good lifestyles. Yet, due to social problems like a severe shortage of housing and high unemployment many families live in conditions unseen in the UK. It would be impossible to change these things and completely beyond the scope of this small charity to do so but we can all help in small ways. The charity is growing from strength to strength and is evolving all the time but, we need your help to continue.

Based in GBR United Kingdom
Research/Dev

The charity Alive and Well started in 2009 and dedicated to taking practical direct action, to moving as quickly as possible to alleviate suffering in Sierra Leone. We will raise funds to buy drilling equipment, ship everything there, and send a team to sink the first phase of bore-holes. This will immediately start to transform communities and save lives. 100% of our funds go to drilling wells, training local crews and supporting them. This is a practical physical solution to get clean water to people who desperately need it. The aim is to avoid bureaucracy and raise funds as quickly as possible so that within 12 months the first team can start sinking bore-holes. We also intend to leave a legacy by leaving drilling rigs on the ground which will be permanently available to the communities in the region and by training the local inhabitants how to use the equipment.

At All Kinds of Minds, we are experts in learning. For more than a decade, we have been translating the latest research from multiple disciplines into a framework to help schools and teachers better understand how students learn and vary in their learning. And we’ve been working with educators to shape this knowledge into strategies and practices that will help students find success – including the students who are currently struggling with learning. We partner with schools, districts, states, higher education, foundations, and other organizations to raise awareness about the value of and need for the science of learning in our schools and provide educators with research-based training and tools they can use in their classrooms. We continue to build the field of knowledge about learning and its variation demonstrate and validate new models for building learning expertise within the teaching profession. We believe that all students should have the opportunity to find success in learning. That all teachers should be learning experts. That all schools should be able to serve the needs of their diverse learners equally. And we believe once teachers understand how students learn and put that into practice—every day, with every student—achievement gaps will close, disengaged students will decrease in number and the chronic underperformance of students in our schools will diminish.
