More information
A non-profit, charitable organisation, Friends of India was founded in 2001 by its current President Pamela Walsh, OBE. Friends of India is entirely dependent on voluntary donations. We value the right to education for all and believe learning and access to opportunity can substantially improve the lives of those we serve, who come from some of the poorest communities in Tamil Nadu, India. Guided by the needs and hopes of these communities, we work closely with local partners to best serve our clients. We share the results of our work with our supporters whom we value as meaningful partners. We demand the highest ethical behaviour of our members, board, staff, partners and beneficiaries. We honour the dignity of our beneficiaries, recognize the contributions of our partners, and uphold respect for local Indian values in our work. Despite India’s rapid growth, many Indians are trapped in poverty with little access to education or opportunity. While many have gained access to basic education, only 65% of Indians are literate, drop-out rates are high and links to jobs remain a challenge. We work closely with local partners in impoverished communities in the state of Tamil Nadu. We fight poverty and create opportunities for children and women by supporting basic education for underserved children and investing in vocational training, life-skills development and income generation for women.
