As the Museum of American Folk Art, it established a reputation for examining virtually every aspect of the folk arts in America. The museum has now chosen its new name, the American Folk Art Museum, as an expression of a further extension of mission.

This past year was filled with extraordinary exhibitions, events, and new initiatives at the American Folk Art Museum. Many of the museum's acclaimed exhibitions go on tour. "Ancestry and Innovation: African American Art from the American Folk Art Museum," which the museum originated in 2005, traveled this year under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES).
