The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is Africa’s leading health development organisation, bringing good quality health care closer to those who need it most. Founded in 1957 initially as the Flying Doctors Service of Kenya, AMREF provides health care to Africa’s most marginalised and vulnerable communities in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania and South Africa. AMREF's headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, sets the strategic direction and priorities for AMREF's work. National offices in North America and Europe support AMREF's work in Africa by providing funding and technical support and by influencing policy and practice and raising awareness of African health issues in their respective countries.
