The AIDS Foundation of South Africa (AFSA), established in 1988, was the first registered AIDS Non-Government Organisation in South Africa. AFSA acts as an interface between donors and community-based organisations and non-governmental organisations working in the HIV and AIDS sector, placing donor funds with strategically selected organisations and providing them with ongoing mentoring, technical support & capacity building. This enables partner organisations to implement relevant and effective interventions to improve the health status and well-being of their communities and target populations. AFSA believes that the best way to implement such programmes is by working through organisations located and operating in close proximity to target communities and groups, because these are made up of local people who understand and experience the needs and challenges.
