The Foodbank solicits food from food industry donors, including growers, manufacturers and retailers. Much of this food is surplus or unmarketable. Instead of throwing it away, it is used to feed the hungry. The food is sorted and repackaged by approximately 10,000 Foodbank volunteers per year. Some of the food is used to create meals in the Foodbank's Cleveland Community Kitchen.
Volunteers and staff from more than 600 Northeast Ohio hunger programs order the food they need from a daily menu of more than 140 items. The orders are picked up by the agencies or delivered to them directly by the Foodbank fleet. Our member agencies (such as hot meal sites and pantries) provide nutritious food to struggling men, women and children in our community. Last year, the Foodbank distributed 32.9 million pounds of food and non-food items to our member programs.
