The Gorilla Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation, protection and well-being of gorillas through interspecies communication research and education. The foundation was established in 1976 and is best known for it's groundbreaking work with two western lowland gorillas, Koko and MIchael, who were taught to become fluent in American Sign Language. The Gorilla Foundation is constructing a unique and critically important gorilla preserve on west Maui, Hawaii. The Maui Ape Preserve will provide a natural environment for Koko and other gorillas, and is a vital step toward saving the species from imminent extinction. MAP will consist of a secluded Sanctuary on 70 acres of land provided by the Maui Land and Pineapple Company, and a unique high-tech Visitor Education Center in a convenient tourist location.
