Food Up Front began life as a simple idea presented at a permaculture design course. The idea was to encourage, enable and support individuals to grow food in their unused outdoor space. Too many people sat on allotment waiting lists without realising they could be growing something at home, albeit only a small amount, while they waited. We saw that many front gardens/balconies/windowsills weren’t being used at all. This seemed strange to us as space is at such a premium. We produced some leaflets an a home computer and started distributing them in our local area, encouraging households to sign up and receive support to start growing food. What has followed has been a big surprise, with highs and lows experienced along the way. Most of all it’s been very exciting! Since we launched there has been a rapid rise in grow-your-own and we continue to work to inspire people to have a go.
