To save the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild.

The Asian elephant is a truly magnificent creature. But sadly it’s on the brink of extinction, marooned in ever-decreasing pockets of forest by the spread of human settlements, farming, mining and railways. In the past 100 years, the elephant population in Asia has shrunk by 90%. In another 30 years, it could easily vanish altogether. We’re the only charity in the UK that’s dedicated solely to this cause – and we rely on the efforts of our entire family network to help us succeed. Our vision is a world in which the Asian elephant is no longer an endangered species. A world in which these magnificent creatures can live alongside humans in harmony – and roam their ancestral lands in safety. We’ve been working with the Wildlife Trust of India to secure the corridor, protect the elephants within it and help local villagers find a better life elsewhere. Another success has been the developing an ‘eco village’ in the Rajaji National Park in India to limit the impact of firewood collection and livestock grazing. We are running a conservation response unit and daily patrols in Gunung Leuser National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia, to reduce human-elephant conflict and we work with vets and mahouts to improve the welfare of captive elephants.
