More information
Samrakshan works for sustainable, equitable, community-based conservation of natural resources and biodiversity. We are commited to integrating conservation and development initiatives in ways that give local communities a strong stake in protecting and regenerating their surrounding natural resource base. Accordingly, we engage communities living around wildlife protected areas in activities that promote efficient husbandry of local natural resources. We work with local communities to raise productivity of land by improving the water regime, introducing sustainable irrigation and boosting soil productivity. Our goal is to integrate livelihood security of the natural resource dependent poor with biodiversity conservation efforts. Samrakshan's major field initiatives for livelihood and conservation are located in 3 states of India. Through these initiatives, our footprint ranges from a semi-arid tropical ecosystem around the Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, to a mountain ecosystem in villages located near the Balpakram National Park in the South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya to the tropical rainforests in Mizoram.
