Since its inception in 1994 with just two full-time employees, the Institute has undergone a rapid period of growth and now employs more than 130 full-time scientific staff who conduct research into the prevention of heart disease. The VCCRI is committed to excellence in research into heart disease and cardiovascular biology, cardiovascular research training, and facilitating the rapid application of research discoveries to patient care. Currently the VCCRI has eight research programs which oversee 5 Research Divisions, Cardiac Physiology & Transplantation, Developmental Biology, Molecular Cardiology & Biophysics, Molecular Genetics & Structural and Computational Biology. The Institute is an independent research facility with its own Board of Directors, chaired by Mr Steven Lowy and is a member of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
