In 1824 a courageous lifeboatman Sir William Hillary coordinates the first lifeboat service. His Appeal to the nation leads to the foundation of the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, later to become the RNLI. RNLI volunteers across the UK and Republic of Ireland are united by a willingness to commit time and energy to a cause about which they are passionate. There are over 230 RNLI lifeboat stations and over 70 RNLI lifeguarded beaches throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 100 beaches in the UK in peak season and assisted almost 10,000 people last year.
