To carry out and publish effective research by improving knowledge of the ageing process, the understanding and use of drug treatments for older people and the quality of life for older people.
To run Memory Clinics to provide an in-depth assessment for people with memory problems, Alzheimer's disease and related conditions and focus for research. To offer appropriate education and/or training to elderly people, their families and carers and to professionals.

The Institute is a Registered Charity. It was opened in 1986 by its Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent. The research carried out by the Institute covers a wide variety of areas and is intended to advance the knowledge and treatment of the more serious conditions affecting older people, in particular Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and to improve their quality of life.
