The Bulgarian Red Cross is a voluntary organisation which is a part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and is guided by its Fundamental Principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality.
Through its network of volunteers in the whole country, the BRC renders assistance to the vulnerable people in disaster and crisis situations. By means of training programmes and activities for the benefit of the public, the National Red Cross Society contributes to alleviating and preventing the suffering in all its forms, protects health and life and ensures respect for the human being.
The first organization of the Red Cross in Bulgaria was founded in 1878 in the town of Sliven. In 1884 the Bulgarian government officially ratifies the Geneva Convention from 1864. The national organization was created in 1885. The organization is also officially recognized by the International Red Cross Committee in Geneva by letter dated October 20, 1885.
The first Bulgarian Red Cross Law is accepted in 1995 from the 37th Bulgarian Parliament. The Organization is registrated as per Law for legal entities with non-profit activity and carrying out activities for public benefit.
