More information
Autistica was founded by autism campaigner and philanthropist, Dame Stephanie Shirley in 2004 to act as a catalyst in increasing funds available for biomedical autism research in the UK. The exact causes of autism are only now beginning to be understood, but we are confident that accelerating autism research will transform our understanding of autism and lead to more effective interventions and treatments. Autism research struggles to attract the sympathy and the money of the wider world because autism does not kill; it merely disables. That disability can be extreme and it is life-long. While fifteen years ago there was only a small number of scientists working on autism research across the world, now there are several hundred. There is still much work to be done, as despite strikingly high prevalence, autism research remains one of the lowest funded areas of medical research by both public and private sources.
