The Friends of Mana Island Incorporated was formed in 1999 to provide support for the Restoration Plan prepared by the Department of Conservation (DoC) in 1987. The Plan calls for a 20 year planting program to restore the vegetation and habitat of the Island to a similar environment to that existing prior to human intervention on the Island. The re-forestation program calls for the planting of some 400,000 trees over the period which now has 5 years to run. As at this time the total planting has reached 350,000.
