The Action for Self Reliance and Alternatives (ASRA) came into existence in 1992, when a group of like minded people came together with a common objective of serving the marginalized segments of society with a special focus on persons with disabilities living in the slums, resettlement colonies, tribal and rural areas. It is a group of researchers, social activists, lawyers, academicians, social workers, doctors, planners and rehabilitation professionals. We identify the needy at an early stage, informing them of their rights; we give the physically handicapped first medical attention and we transfer them to hospitals, where appropriate. Our aim is to promote economic independence and rehabilitation through enhancing physical and functional competencies and skill development and to develop sustainable resources for prevention, early identifications & intervention, integrated education, employment, recreation, respite care and other needs in the community through partnership with disabled persons, their families and community.
