The Brainerd Foundation is a Northwest-focused family foundation that provides grants to strengthen the ability of nonprofits, communities, and decision-makers to protect our region's air, land, and water. In addition to funding, we provide expertise to our nonprofit partners and collaborate with other foundations to find new methods of advocacy, policy implementation, and capacity building. We work with our grantees to choose the most appropriate strategies to accomplish their goals. In many cases, we challenge the organizations to take risks and create new business models. These methods are designed to be highly successful with a significant and long-lasting impact. We have developed an organizational theory of change to serve as a visual representation of this philosophical pathway to social change. As a small foundation, we cannot fight every fight, no matter how urgent or worthy. Therefore, we provide grants within a focused set of funding areas.
