As the largest and oldest art museum in the state of Maine, the Museum (founded in 1882) serves as a vital cultural resource for all who visit. The Museum's collection of more than 17,000 objects is housed in three historic and remarkable buildings showcasing three centuries of art and architecture. Portland Museum of Art preserves, documents, and interprets four significant architectural landmarks and a rich variety of art drawn from its collections and from loans to encourage its visitors and community to experience original work.
